This is just too damn nice. Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and Dres of Black Sheep collaborate on “Flight (Energy),” a reinterpretation of the original track off Jaleel’s Optimism jazz album. Dres hit up Jaleel on Twitter to let him know that he digged the song “Flight” and that he wanted to rhyme over it, and here we are. Featuring Robert Glasper on rhodes, Lage Lund on guitar, Joe Martin on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums.

He’s one of the most productive, one of the most eclectic, and, according to some, one of the most mysterious emcees. After our 2013 interview, The Find decided it was time to catch up with Blu a.k.a. Her Favorite Color a.k.a. the emcee with many nicknames. The prolific artist from Los Angeles discusses records that feel like trophies, going with what feels right, and the vibes on his upcoming projects. “A lot of dreams happen to come true in the process.” Though it’s a little late, I’d still like to say: congratulations on the brilliant record with MED and Madlib. Thank you sir, I love the record to depth. I can’t believe we made it and I also can’t believe it sounds so phenomenal. How do you look back on creating Bad Neighbor? The creation was pure joy, and a pleasure creating similar to Good To Be Home. Both of those records feel like trophies to me. The reception was ideal, (...)

Try: Six Degrees of Music Separation

$

According to the theory of Six Degrees of Separation, everybody and everything is connected in six or fewer steps. That means you’re six handshakes away from Barack Obama — or Kevin Bacon, for that matter. That means the same theory would apply to music, right? Enter WhoSampled: the digital librarians of sampling came up with Six Degrees of Music Separation, a fun tool to find out how two random artists are connected and how many steps it takes to find a mutual sample, cover, remix, or production credit. Enter two names, and ’6-D’ (who looks like a futuristic version of Clippy the Office Assistant on steroids) does the magic for you. It’s no surprise that Nujabes and J Dilla are only one step away from each other, and that Rick Rubin pops up as a connecting factor for a whole lot of artists. But who would’ve thought you can link Norwegian beatmaker Fredfades to the horrible crossover trash metal music by Suicidal (...)

Listen: MindsOne & DJ Iron – Phaseology

Well well, a whole lot of familiar names we have here: MindsOne (who we’ve featured on this site and in our podcast Stay Thirsty before) and DJ Iron from Belgium (who did an underground hip hop mix for The Find a few years ago) are back with a new collaboration, a full-length album this time. The album’s out now on Ill Adrenaline, a New Jersey based label which dropped releases before with production work by K-Def and D.I.T.C’s Buckwild, Showbiz & AG, as well as with guest appearances by INI’s Grap Luva and Rob-O. And —more importantly for this post— Pillars by MindsOne & Kev Brown, the predecessor of the album we’re talking about now. Alright, enough with the name dropping. The album contains 14 pleasant boom bap tracks with a very little touch of jazz. Out now on vinyl (limited to 200 copies), available via Vinyl Digital, HHV, Fat Beats, or UGHH. “[MindsOne & DJ Iron] aim to examine the bigger picture. Why (...)

Mix: DJ Yoda – Stranger Things

After binge watching the first five episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix (without the chill) yesterday, I was impressed by the soundtrack right away. Mostly synth-heavy compositions, but also 70s and 80s tunes by the likes of Joy Division, The Clash, New Order, and David Bowie. At first I was a bit sceptical about the series (“a 12-year-old boy vanishes mysteriously” - YAWN), but it’s surprisingly good. Suspense-filled, tense, and mysterious — like being a kid walking over a dark forest path at midnight, all by yourself. Today I found this mix by UK turntablist DJ Yoda, which is a great 52-minute ride, even if you’re not into the series (yet). Consisting of music featured in and inspiring the Netflix TV show. An odd wink to 80s horror as well as pop charts. To prove the latter, wait till Toto kicks in… And in related news: last week it has been announced the OST of Stranger Things will get an official release, but there’s no (...)

Listen: Pete Philly – Until (Jakarta Records)

Seeing artists grow and evolve, is one of the pleasures of being a music blogger for years — or music fan, for that matter. And growth exactly seems to be a keyword when talking about the work of emcee/singer Pete Philly. This time he delivers a percussion-heavy track with “Until,” produced by Pablo Penton, with clear African influences hearing the rhythms and melodies.  The song is quite different if you’re more familiar with him from the Pete Philly & Perquisite days (if not: Mindstate is an absolute must-have, seriously), or from his versatile album One, dating back to 2011 — time flies indeed... Okay, enough talking about the old stuff, in with the new: press play and enjoy “Until” until there’s new material available. Which, based on this song, we’re looking forward to big time. “Being revolutionary when everything is scary Is necessary for the whole heart.“ More: Jakarta Records

We’re 42 years late with this one, but it’s pure gold! Singer/dancer/actor and Rat Pack affiliate Sammy Davis Jr. stars in this whisky commercial by iconic Japanese brand Suntory, one of the oldest breweries and distilleries in Japan. The video features Sammy pouring himself a glass of Suntory whisky on the rocks, while scatting out of pure joy. Or as Bill Murray says it best in Lost In Translation: “For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.”

Dutch beatmaker deeB (part of the Dusted Wax Kingdom family, as well as his self-established beatmakers collective Phonophanatic) is about to make his full-length vinyl debut. As you probably know, it’s quite the gamble -and investment- for an indie artist to press music on vinyl. That’s why, backed by Dutch platform Chillhop, they’ve started a project on Qrates, an analog-on-demand vinyl pressing service. Qrates allows artists to press vinyl records starting on as low as 100 copies, completely on on-demand basis. So if you reach the goal, the record will be pressed at one of their partners, vinyl plant WOLFPACK (France) or GZ Media (The Netherlands). If not, then nothing happens. Makes life for an indie artist with a vinyl wish, a whole lot easier… Slowmocean But, back to deeB: his new album Slowmocean is out now, and consists of 8 tracks inspired by the ocean, and the power of the tides. Translation: 8 atmospheric, warm, downtempo hip hop tracks. Support deeB and get your vinyl copy of Slowmocean. (...)

Back in February 2015, Damu The Fudgemunk played a live beat set at Backyard Joints, a bimonthly event in Berlin hosted by BeatPete (of HHV / Mellow Orange), which always manages to impress locals with the lineups, ranging from Freddie Joachim to Kalhex to Fredfades & Ivan Ave. Organized with lots of love and dedication for grown-up hip hop, beats, funk, soul, and jazz. Prior to the event, Damu and Pete recorded a Vinyl Session together (#54 in the series) at Pete’s home. Today they dropped the audio of the session, which features tracks by the likes of Ohmega Watts, Klaus Layer, J-Live, Blu, Dilla, Asheru & Blue Black, The Roots, and a whole lot more. Double K of People Under The Stairs working on a new SP-1200 Project

On the one hand we were surprised to hear about a collab between PUTS producer/emcee Double K and Redefinition Records, but on the other hand the combination is more than logical. It’s a match made in heaven: a mutual passion for hip hop, killer productions reminiscent of old school beats, and both managed with an independent DIY ethic that’s extremely respectworthy.  On Redef’s Instagram we noticed Double K is busy working on an SP-1200 project. No other details have been shared yet, but according to the caption the release is “Coming Soon.” And apparently more collabs with Double K and Thes One are in the pipeline, as Redef mentions affiliated designer Joe Buck is working on an artwork for “one of the next PUTS collabs.” For those not too familiar with hardware: the SP-1200 is a drum machine and sampler released by E-mu in 1987. Known for a warm and gritty sound, the SP-1200 became the tool of choice for many (East Coast) beatmakers in the golden era of hip (...)

Ever since featuring FloFilz in our Dope Beatmakers You Should Know list back in 2013, we’re hooked on his music. From reworking classic material like The Look Of Love and 1nce Again with a jazzy flavour, to his full-length Metronom release. Now the German producer is back with Taxi Bossa, a taster for his forthcoming album Cenário, out September 2nd via Melting Pot Music. The video has been shot by Robert Winter, the guy behind the photography for the iconic Hi-Hat Club series.  “‘Cenário’ is Portuguese for scenario but also means backdrop or situation. It’s a perfect fit as we have chosen the beautiful city of Lisbon as the visual backdrop for this album. In March we hopped on a plane with photographer Robert Winter and spent some quality time in Europe’s oldest city. Enjoying the ambiance, food and visting the local record stores on our hunt for rare bossa and MFB gems. Boa viagem!” – Melting Pot Music

Listen: Previously unreleased Junior M.A.F.I.A demos with Biggie (1992-1994) + Vinyl

Hip hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A. was formed and mentored by the late great Notorious B.I.G. in the mid-90s. All Masters At Finding Intelligent Attitudes were childhood friends of Biggie. Fast-forward to 2016: UK record label Chopped Herring, the masters of finding previously unreleased material and demo tapes, unearthed an EP dubbed Biggie + Unknown Producer. But thanks to research and digging by Mike Pizzo, the co-creator of Cuepoint @ Medium, they got the missing info: the producer is Daddy-O of pioneering hip hop crew Stetsasonic. The good news: Chopped Herring released the EP on vinyl, limited to 500 copies, with Freestyle Fellowship’s 1 Style At A Tyme on the B-side. The bad news: within 3 minutes pretty much all copies were sold out, following two failed attempts with crashing servers. According to the Chopped Herring website there are “some” left, and they are currently figuring out the fairest way to sell them. Better keep an eye on their site and social media channels… Either way, listen to snippets of (...)

Great to see Fat Beats crossing the pond to Germany to get a third collaborator for Baker’s Dozen, their instrumental series on vinyl. That says something about the beat scene there.. Following in the footsteps of Ohbliv and Dibia$e, this time Radio Juicy affiliate Wun Two takes on the role of music selector. If you can’t get enough of 90s hip hop and that traditional boom bap sound fused with tasty jazz loops and melodic grooves, then Volume Three of Baker’s Dozen is for you. The vinyl record will be released on September 9th. If you pre-order the record, a flexi-disc with the unreleased track “Yildizlar” will be included, and each record comes with a postcard insert that features a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used in his music-making process. Listen to “Marinheiro” below, the first offering from Wun Two’s Baker’s Dozen installment. And if you don’t know it already, make sure to check out his Rio album from a few years ago, it’s great.
